In preparing this little work for the press I have contemplated the supplying a want sensibly felt by our young students of English, especially by those who have no daily opportunity of eon. suiting a master. It has been my design to adopt this hook not only to the use of beginners bet also to that at the higher schools in our country. By a judicious use of the scope allotted to me I have endeavored to render this Dictionary as comprehensive as possible, and have exerted myself to give the greatest quantity of useful matter in the most condensed form. Therefore I trust it will be found to contain more words, Anglicisms and prepositions than any Dictionary of equal compass. Muth care has been taken in exhibiting the pronunciation of the English part. To those who are no strangers to this department of literature I need scarcely observe that my task was rather difficult, the more so as there is much diversity with respect to the pronuncletionofmany words. For this part I have had recourse principally to the Dictionaries of Worcester and Webster. Respecting words of various or disputed pronunciation 1 have either indicated the different modes or given that which is in accordance with the best usage, as far as it is possible to know this from personal observation. Much attention has been bestowed on the insertion of numerous prepositions that govern. and pronouns. They have been carefully compiled and arranged from the newest and best Mstionaries, Grammars and Manuals and will be found to take up no small portion of the work; and as the verbs active and neuter are easefully distinguished this point may be deemed a material end valuable improvement and one well calculated to enhance the usefulness of this Dictionary. Though having bestowed upon this book a great deal of labor, research and care I am well aware that it is in various respects defective. Apologizing for the typographical errors which, despite every effort to be accurate, may no doubt be detected in it, I venture to hope that it will receive an equitable judgment. How far I have euceeeded I humbly leave to others to decide, but if to all that are engaged in acquiring or teaching the English language this Dictionary shall prove an acceptable and useful assistant, I shall not regret having devoted my leisure hours to its preparation. T . P.
Tutors are often keen for students of subjects such as Politics or International Relations to participate in Erasmus. It is seen as a great opportunity to study abroad while not having the expense of studying outside the European Union, since the grants available to Erasmus students are not available to those opting to leave the continent to study.
